Panama’s unique position and passion of the Panama Canal make it a diverse melting pot of cultures and languages.  It is a major hub for travel, tourism, and industry with substantial infrastructure and services.  For all of its strengths though, 24 percent of all residents live below the poverty line although this isn’t noticeable until you get away from the highly developed tourist and economic districts.

Child labor and poor school attendance are high for this rapidly developing nation.  Educational programs exist for child laborers and those living on the street.  Volunteers work to get the child’s education up to an acceptable level and then work to get them enrolled in state school giving these children a second chance at a good education.  Volunteers often enter rural and poor parts of town seeking street children to enroll in their free service programs.  For younger children getting ready for the first year of school, the program offers a summer school program to help prepare poor children.  Enrollment fees and uniforms are often provided by charitable individuals both foreign and domestic.

For those who would like to volunteer for free in Panama to help animals, consider signing up to participate in anti poaching patrols.  When leatherback turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, they are often captured and killed either for their meat or their eggs.  Turtles that make it back to see are still under threat of fisherman’s lines or ingesting plastic that they mistake for jellyfish.  Whether you are patrolling the shore for poachers, looking for stray litter and fishing line, or protecting nests from egg thieves you can make a difference in the survival of this treasured species.

Like so many other areas in Central America , teaching English to children and adults expands their employment opportunities and broadens their horizons thru cultural exchange.  Teach English as a foreign language at one of many volunteer schools, social centers, or orphanages.  Certified teachers are welcomed at numerous organizations both public and private.  Most who teach ESL classes do so to help the poor and underprivileged, but employment opportunities do exist.
