Because
Honduras
hasn’t been taken over by the tourist trade, it provides an interesting blend of
Spanish and Mayan culture. Wonder the
sprawling fruit markets and bargain for deals with local farmers in the city streets. As you get farther from civilization,
the lack of proper water treatment and sanitation facilities becomes apparent. International volunteer organizations
are currently assisting cities and regions develop and implement water filtration
and sanitations systems since this has recently been deregulated by the nation’s
leaders. Proper hygiene and sanitation
coupled with a source of pure water has provided an immediate benefit for these
rural residents.
Participate in one of the free volunteer programs to educate children living on
the streets, or provide after school programs to help children off of the streets. Many organizations also provide a meal
or snack to help feed children since they may get little or nothing at home. It is heartbreaking to watch the children
head off to the streets a night or back to a neglectful home, but your time and
love can create a brighter future for these children.
Without a proper education and supportive relationships with international
volunteers these children would have even less of a chance.
Other free volunteer programs focus on teaching English as a way to help children
succeed in the work place. English
isn’t superior to Spanish (or any other language) but English speaking Hondurans
have job opportunities not available to everyone else.
They can lead tour groups, work at larger hotel chains and resorts, and a
better chance to get hired on with international companies.
Any industry that deals with tourists would welcome an English speaking employee;
restaurants, taxi drivers, retail stores, the list goes on and on.
Helping young adults train for and obtain jobs is one of the most important
things an international volunteer can do.
A few weeks or months of your live will benefit these individuals for the rest of
their lives.
