The volunteer positions in
Belize
are limited due to the relatively small and distributed population, but the programs
that are available are extremely worth while.
One organization works with a
US
university to develop sustainable farming practices to produce food crops and to
develop environmentally responsible agricultural practices.
Plant different varieties of plants and track their growth and rates of production
to determine the best choices for full scale production.
After seed and planting strategyies have been selected, villagers are trained
and the knowledge is spread thru the surrounding communities.
A project to grow and produce vanilla plants is currently underway and will
provide income opportunities for the local residents.
Modern green building practices are also being taught, such as earth bag building. These efficient, economical, and environmentally
responsible buildings provide a welcome relief for volunteers and locals alike. The supplies are light and can easily
be transported to remote areas where the bags are filled up and shelters erected. Volunteers work to explain the benefits
besides a cheap home to further spread the message of environmentally responsible
living.
For those more interested in the flora and fauna,
Belize
has an active Audubon society that administers large tracts of wilderness, several
islands, and other protected areas.
Volunteers work to maintain the parks and preserves as well as providing training
and support to surrounding communities.
Maya Mountain Research Farm
is an NGO that promotes sustainable agriculture, appropriate technology and food
safety using permacultur principles and applied biodiversity. Their goal is
to develop agro-ecological system that preserves the natural ecosystems while allowing
local villagers to generate agricultural income.
